CRITERION C

Grade 9 Design Unit
Statement of Inquiry: How we feel and act is influenced subconsciously by the environment we created around us. We can change ourselves by changing our environment
Problem: In April 2019 HJIS will open the new Media Centre and currently it is a big empty space and not ready for use.
Design Brief: Your task is to research Media Centres, Libraries, Interior Design, Architecture and, matching with the current and future needs of the HJIS Staff and Students, create a well-designed space that enhances learning and creativity. Students reflect on how the built environment has a large hand in subconsciously shaping how we feel, and therefore how we act. Students design this space so it has a positive effect on the users feelings and behaviour. Students create a scale architectural model that showcases this new space.
Design Specifications: Your DESIGN must
- be accurate in size and measurement
- skillfully use colour to enhance learning and creativity
- meet the needs of the stakeholders and end users
- skillful select furniture to enhance learning and creativity
- be visually attractive and inviting
- be able to have two large classes use the room at the same time without disruption
- be neat and tidy
ATLs Addressed:
- Thinking skills
- Communication skills
- Research skills

Assessment:
0 >> The student does not reach a standard described by any of the descriptors below.
1-2 >> The student:
i. demonstrates minimal technical skills when making the solution
ii. creates the solution, which functions poorly and is presented in an incomplete form.
3-4 >> The student:
i. constructs a plan that contains some production details, resulting in peers having difficulty following the plan
ii. demonstrates satisfactory technical skills when making the solution
iii. creates the solution, which partially functions and is adequately presented
iv. outlines changes made to the chosen design and plan when making the solution.
5-6 >> The student:
i. constructs a logical plan, which considers time and resources, sufficient for peers to be able to follow to create the solution
ii. demonstrates competent technical skills when making the solution
iii. creates the solution, which functions as intended and is presented appropriately
iv. describes changes made to the chosen design and plan when making the solution.
7-8 >> The student:
i. constructs a detailed and logical plan, which describes the efficient use of time and resources, sufficient for peers to be able to follow to create the solution
ii. demonstrates excellent technical skills when making the solution.
iii. follows the plan to create the solution, which functions as intended and is presented appropriately
iv. fully justifies changes made to the chosen design and plan when making the solution

i. My detailed and logical plan, which describes the efficient use of time and resources. My plan is detailed enough that my peers would be able to follow to create the solution. (e.g. 45min to work on the walls and floor and getting them the correct measurement and I used SketchUp))

ii. My list of software/hardware and an outline of the excellent technical skills I employed/demonstrated when making the solution.
iii. I followed my plan and created a solution, which functions as intended and is presented appropriately and here is my product.
iv. As I was making my product I made some changes and improvements to my original concept - here is a list of the changes/improvements that I made and why each change was made.
